Andrea Wenckeback

Andrea has traveled extensively and also worked abroad for a number of years. Much of the inspiration for her work comes from the architecture and art of other countries. She is intrigued by the latticework of the ancient temples and palaces of South Korea, and South East Asia, the antique ironworks of the balconies of Paris and the extraordinary church gates of Buenos Aries’s older districts. All of these things share a lacy, almost ephemeral look while being strong, solid and enduring, despite their age. Her work attempts to combine these two aspects. Usually the edges of Andrea’s work are solid, unadorned planes with filigree centers. The shapes she chooses are usually geometric, reflecting the style of many ancient buildings. This also serves as a counterpoint to the curving sweeping curls of the filigree which fills the forms.

Andrea graduated from York University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Arts honour degree and continued her education by completing the goldsmithing and silversmith program at Georgian College where she finished on the Dean’s List with the highest grade point average three years running; as well as, receiving numerous awards for excellence in her work.
Since graduating she has been exhibited in several Ontario Galleries and completed commissions designing pins for Ontario agencies including; The Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council.
