Charles Funnell

Charles received a BFA from York University followed by a BEd from the University of Western University Ontario. He has always had a keen interest in learning which has played an important role in his development as illustrated by the following studies. He has taken many night classes in jewellery making at George Brown College and fell in love with silversmithing while taking over a decade of summer classes at Haliburton School of the Arts, many under the expert tutelage of Lois Etherington Betteridge. Continuing his studies culminated in becoming a certified Gemmologist (FCGmA). He has continued to take numerous workshops under such noted names as Donald Stuart, Charles Lewton Brain, Ken Vickerson and Irish silversmith Brian Clark. Recently he has spent two years at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design working intensively under the enthusiastic guidance of Brigitte Clavette. His productivity and creative spirit were nurtured and given flight at this small gem of a college.
Charles has only recently begun to exhibit his work, beginning with the exhibition titled "Teacher, Silversmith, Mentor" which honoured Lois Etherington Betteridge in 2002. His piece titled "Spirit in the Sky" won the Holloware Award in the Metal Arts Guild of Canada exhibition titled "Northern Lights". More recently he won a Judges' Choice Award, the 60th Anniversary Steel Trophy Award for his piece titled "Dionysus Drinks" in the exhibition, "60 Years of the Metal Arts Guild". Charles' first solo exhibition titled, "Metallurgic Reaction" was held in the gallery at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2005. Soon after he was honoured to have his show remounted at Olde Government House in Fredericton New Brunswick. It accompanied an exhibition titled "In Service" featuring many of Canada's finest metalsmiths including Lois Etherington Betteridge and Brigitte Clavette. It was a great honour for him. Currently a piece of his has been selected as one of the five finalists in the Holloware Category for "The Saul Bell Awards 2008". These international awards will be announced in May 2008.
