Chet studied theatre and design while attending the University of Victoria. Having moved to Toronto to ply his trade in set design, he spent a couple years exploring possibilities in the theatre scene.
His jewellery career began because he was broke and had to come up with some form of gift for his sisters at Christmas. He started carving pendants and rings from wood that was left over at the theatre. This started his new venture, sculpting in small scale, producing wearable sculptures, and in the process teaching himself the necessary skills to produce the designs that emerged.
Chets most recent designs take the organic material and strip away the elaborate carving of his early designs, leaving the subtle beauty of the wood to emerge in the pared down, modernist forms. Drawing upon his training in visual arts and theatre design, his new direction in jewellery evokes architectural forms from their simple, graphic lines.
Setting the wood against precious metals add value to these pieces, from an otherwise ordinary material, pushing to change our perspective towards this invaluable resource.
