Dorothée Rosen

The word ‘organic’ might be the first thing that comes to mind when viewing my work. One could find perhaps the tiniest hint of art nouveau in it (for example the rosette-like arrangements of the Precious series). This is a big change from the clean, modernist designs of my early work, which were heavily influenced by my German upbringing.

While remaining continually inspired by my extensive studies in craft and design history, I also feel very passionate about the materials of the trade and their intrinsic beauty and qualities. I look for discoveries by working through hundred of samples. My design process is therefore material driven: I design through material, rather than for it. I am intrigued by the story the metal has to tell, and, in designing new work, like to keep my mind open to serendipity.

I am always interested in working with line, exploring manipulation of the line itself, and of volume created through line. This is expressed in a variety of ways. In my Onefooter series, a length of silver manipulated first to give articulation of the line itself, is then wound to give volume. I delight in the lines created in the folds of a Crush Ring. Findings lets the wearer create their own version of the long strand of semiprecious stones and magnets. In Precious, very thin gold sheet is folded and wound around an uncut diamond.

While always elegant, my work at times has a sense of playfulness, most often achieved through the use of rare earth magnets, or colour choices. I always strive for my work to bring joy into people’s lives.
