John Carnes - "Tangible Shadows: A Balinese Shadow Play Rendered in Metal"
Opening Reception: Thurs, Oct 4th, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM
The inspiration for the exhibition stems from the melding of two of my passions: Jewellery design/Metalwork, and playing the music of Balinese “Wayang Kulit”, (Shadow Play).
The traditional leather puppets are ornately stamped (pierced) to create beautiful, lace like shadows. The pierced sheet metal on a black background will be, in effect, a reverse, negative image of the shadow puppets (light object on dark shadow, instead of dark shadow on light object). To me, this really speaks to the title, “Tangible Shadows”.

My current work is a joyful expression of our urban existence here in Toronto.
From the deliberate cool of modern architecture
to the riotous anarchy of graffiti
the hard steel and glass of subways and streetcars
and their fragile, colorful passengers the dissonant juxtapositions of cultures, age groups, life styles and beliefs,
harmonizing like some great Jazz Symphony the sensual confetti of sights, sounds and smells that makes us who we are: that is my inspiration.
