Shao-Pin Chu

Shao-Pin Chu studied industrial sheet metal work in Taiwan; and received training including welding, general machining and metal forming. After moving to Canada in 1993, he attended the jewellery arts program at George Brown College; moving from large industrial forms to fine intricate works. The industrial experience helped a lot with the development of his art metal work. The recent direction and focus of his work is architectural hardware, industrial design and sculpture.
As an artist, he is interested in the realization of the intrinsic, emotional and significance of shapes, understanding form more completely in its relation to the human body. As a craftsman, he has to work with practical considerations such as functionality, comfort and cost.
His inspiration comes from nature and the world around him. Here he is continually learning the principles of creativity, balance and rhythm, and applies them to his work to grasp three essential elements: imagination, beauty and clarity of form. Harmony among these elements means strength and purity. This is what he is looking for, as much in his art as in his life.
